South girls blast Winfield, 77-47

by Jim Butta, Parkersburg News & Sentinel

PARKERSBURG-Fans of the Parkersburg South girls basketball team barely had time to get comfortable in their seats before the host Patriots made sure the visiting Generals from Winfield had no chance of winning their fourth game on the young season.

Led by four double-digit performances the red, white and blue upped its mark to 3-1 on the campaign with a 30-point, 77-47, decision over Winfield.

"We still have to get a little better with our ball fakes, but for the first time this season we had a decent second half," Patriot head coach Scott Stephens explained.

Mary Seagraves connected on 8-of-13 shots from the field and all but one of her four opportunities from the charity strip to lead the hosts with 19 points. Sammy Hicks chipped in with 14 points while Jessica Moore and Asia Greenleaf, who was playing her second game of the season, contributed 11 each.

Winfield, which dropped to 3-3 on the season, received a game-high 21 points from Jade Smith, but no other General tallied more than six in the contest.

"I thought Jess (Moore) played a great game and it was really nice to see Asia get her 600th point," added the coach. "It will be nice to get her back full time."

Greenleaf, who missed the Patriots' first two games, came off the bench with 3:16 left in the first quarter and proceeded to tally two of the Patriots' next three buckets to add her name to the list of 19 other Parkersburg South players to accomplish the feat during their stay at the Blizzard Drive school.

Moore, who also hauled down seven rebounds, got things rolling for the hosts with a putback at the 7:10 mark and Hicks made sure the Generals would never see the lead during the first eight minutes of action with her first triple 25 seconds later.

Winfield, which turned the ball over on its first three possessions, finally lit up the scoreboard when Bethany Jordan took a Rachel Ashley pass and laid it in for two points.

Those, however, would be the final points for the visitors over the next three minutes as the Patriots put together another 5-0 run to forge a 10-3 advantage.

An advantage which continued to grow as the first quarter came to a close as a Hicks' triple at the horn sent the teams to the benches with South leading by 14, 19-5.

Seagraves continued to show why she is an early candidate for all-state honors as the senior poured in six more of her team-high points over the next eight minutes of action as Parkersburg South outscored its guests by a 17-12 margin in the second frame to nearly double their opponents' total at the half, 36-17.

The Patriots' inside game continued to play havoc on the Generals' defense in the third quarter as Seagraves tallied eight points while Moore added five. Both teams pretty much cleared their benches for the final eight minutes of action.
