Carolina signee Christina Dewitt responded to a poor game in the
opening round with 32 points to lead North Myrtle Beach to a 67-62
victory over Parkersburg South in the consolation bracket of the
Sixth Annual Holiday Invitational at the Myrtle Beach (SC)
Convention Center.
Dewitt, who tallied 16 points on 6-of-28 shooting from the field
in a first round loss for the Lady Chiefs, hit 14-of-24 on Monday.
In addition to her 32 points, the 6-3 senior added eight rebounds,
five assists, four blocks and two steals.
The first consolation bracket game turned out to be the most
competitive game of the tournament thus far. In the opening half,
the teams combined for four ties and three lead changes. North
Myrtle Beach led for much of the opening 10 minutes before
Parkersburg South took a brief advantage.
Trailing 21-20 with 6:25 to play, Parkesburg South scored six
unanswered points to grab a 26-21 advantage on Jill Stephens layup
with 2:19 to play. The teams traded basketes in the closing
seconds and Lavonya Wilson connected on a pair of free throws with
20 second remaining to pull North Myrtle Beach to 28-26 at
halftime.
The second half proved to be enev closer than the first as the
fans were entertained to eight ties and 13 lead changes. With
Parkersburg South leading 60-59 with 2:26 on the clock, North
Myrtle Beach's Dewitt scored two consecutive baskets and Zaporia
Carr hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Chiefs a 65-60
advantage. The Patriots misfired from the 3-point line in te final
minute as NMB held on for the victory.
Carr posted 23 points for North Myrtle Beach. The Lady Chiefs
connected on over 51 percent from the field and 18-of-21 from the
free throw line.
Michelle Molinari led Parkersburg South with 20 points as she
connected on 8-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-5 from behind
the 3-point arc. Jill Stephens chipped in with 16 points and five
rebounds for the Patriots. |
