Parkersburg South completes perfect week

By Kerry Patrick, Parkersburg News & Sentinel

PARKERSBURG - Plan 'B' worked just fine for the Parkersburg South girls basketball team.

Not the biggest fan of the zone defense, South coach Scott Stephens improvised to contain Woodrow Wilson's penetration on offense during the second quarter of Saturday night's second game at the Chick-fil-A/Wendy's Holiday Tournament. The change in philosophy resulted in a Patriots' 61-52 victory at Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

"(Woodrow Wilson) was doing a nice job getting dribble penetration in the first quarter and we had too many fouls, so we went to a matchup zone," Stephens said. "That seemed to confuse them for a little bit.

"We prefer to play man-to-man and probably would not have played as much zone as we did, but it seemed to be working all right. I guess you go with what works."

Second-ranked South fell behind by as many as five points late in the first quarter at 16-11. A pair of buckets from Patriots senior Danielle Floyd curtailed the Flying Eagles' momentum in a 9-2 run to end the period.

South switched from a man-to-man defense to open the second quarter and Woodrow Wilson seemed flustered. The Flying Eagles hit just one field goal for the entire eight minutes as the Patriots outscored their guests 16-2 and pulled ahead 36-20 by intermission. Six different players accounted for the South scoring, including Floyd who became the 20th player in the program's history to reach 600 points in her career after scoring 20 for the game.

"That is a pretty exclusive club and I am really happy for her," Stephens said. "She is a great kid and a leader of our basketball team. She just does a lot of good things for us."

The South advantage held steady at 41-27 midway into the third quarter before the Patriots buried the Flying Eagles with a 9-2 run over the final 5 minutes of the period.

Woodrow Wilson did not go away quietly, however. Behind a pair of buckets from both Erin Reynolds and Ashley Chipps, the Flying Eagles sliced the deficit to 55-45 with 4:15 still remaining in regulation.

The Patriots did not sink a field goal in the fourth quarter, but sealed its third straight victory to open the season by converting 11-of-15 attempts from the free-throw line. South's Kelsi Halbert was 8-of-8 from the charity stripe for the game and finished with 10 points, while Sammie Hicks added nine points to go with three steals and two blocks. Off the South bench, Asia Greenleaf pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

"We like to practice zone when we get ahead a lot because we are not very good at it," Floyd admitted. "We're definitely better at man-to-man and pressuring the ball."

Haley Snyder led Woodrow Wilson with 17 points, while Charlene Diggs poured in 16 points. The fifth-ranked Flying Eagles went 0-for-Parkersburg this week after losing to the Parkersburg Big Reds on Tuesday and the Patriots on Saturday.

In the first game at the Holiday Tournament, Tiffany Nicholson scored 19 points, while Kelsi Wright and Mariah Byrd each pitched in 12 points as third-ranked North Marion defeated George Washington 79-27.

PARKERSBURG — Another game, another lopsided victory for North Marion’s girls’ basketball team.
The Huskies continued their fast start to the season Saturday with a 79-27 romp of George Washington in the Parkersburg South tournament.
North (2-0) led 24-11 after the first quarter, 46-13 at halftime and swelled its advantage to 64-19 by the end of three.

Wright added nine steals and five assists; Byard also chipped in five assists.
