South dominates GW, 67-29

PARKERSBURG - It must be the shoes.

After forgetting his dress shoes at home, Parkersburg South girls basketball coach Scott Stephens returned to Rod Oldham Athletic Center just in time for warm-ups at Friday's Chick-fil-A/Wendy's Holiday Tournament game with George Washington.

Once in his comfort zone, Stephens did not have to put much wear and tear on his loafers strolling up and down the sidelines as his team dominated George Washington 67-29.

"I would be after my girls if they forgot their shoes," Stephens said. "I'm not going to bench myself, but the girls may make me run (today) in practice."

Friday's schedule originally featured two games, but the opener between third-ranked North Marion and fifth-ranked Woodrow Wilson was canceled because North Marion was unable to attend. The school has a policy that if there is no classes, there are no games.

As a result, today's Holiday Tournament schedule pits North Marion against George Washington at 6 p.m. followed by South entertaining Woodrow Wilson at 7:30 p.m.

"North Marion has to play by their county rules - it's unfortunate that we didn't get that game in," Stephens said. "It would have fun to see them and Beckley play. Somehow, we will have to get a game made up between Beckley and North Marion. I don't know how they will choose to do that. It's put them both in a spot."

Even after falling behind 5-4, South's game with George Washington was never in doubt. South, which improved to 2-0, dominated the glass and scored eight second-chance points during a 16-0 run which put the host team in front 20-5 with 23 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The story in the second quarter was much the same, but with a heavy emphasis on turnovers. George Washington, playing in its season opener, committed 10 turnovers in the period and fell behind 39-11 by intermission.

South junior Jessica Moore had eight points and eight rebounds in the first half alone, while senior Danielle Floyd scored 11 points and pulled down four boards.

"Our pressure defense was causing them some problems," Stephens said. "I think they were missing a couple of kids that he doesn't have right now but will make him a better team later."

George Washington was without one starter - 5-foot-9 senior captain Kathleen Barber. Even her presence may not have made the difference as South scored the first four points of the second half to push the margin to 43-11. The largest lead of the night occurred after South ran off eight straight points midway in the fourth quarter which increased the gap to 62-24.

Floyd finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Moore contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Off the South bench, Asia Greenleaf provided 10 points and six boards, while 5-5 sophomore Allison Parsons finished with seven rebounds in her varsity debut.

"Allison went out and made mistakes, but she just played her butt off," Stephens said. "She was on the floor more than she was standing upright, diving after loose balls and getting rebounds. Those are the kind of kids we like to have on our team, who aren't afraid to get after it."
