South stops Capital
  • Girls basketball roundup - Charleston Gazette
Junior Taylor Phillips dropped in 14 points Monday night to lead host Parkersburg South to a 53-43 girls basketball victory over Capital.

It was the first regular-season loss since 2003-04 for the Cougars (1-1), who went 22-0 during the regular season a year ago and were ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AAA.

Capital came into Monday night’s game ranked No. 3 in the preseason state poll, one spot ahead of Parkersburg South.

Phillips, a transfer from defending Class A state champion Parkersburg Catholic, was her team’s only double-figure scorer. She knocked down a pair of 3-point field goals.

The Patriots (2-0) held Capital to 31.3 percent shooting and forced the Cougars into a dozen turnovers.

Junior Shawnice Garland led Capital with 15 points and Kennisha Mitchell added 14.

The Cougars played without their other returning starter, junior Shawnita Garland, the twin sister of Shawnice. Shawnita Garland suffered a sprained knee in her team’s season-opening victory at George Washington.

South shot just 33.9 percent and committed eight turnovers.

The Patriots led at halftime 27-17 and extended it to 44-24 after three quarters before Capital began to cut back on its large deficit.
