'Jackets and Patriots win at Shootout By JIM BUTTA, Parkersburg News & Sentinel WILLIAMSTOWN - Just as expected, tonight's 10th annual Donnie Fenton Shootout at Williamstown High School will be an all-Wood County affair after Williamstown defeated Sissonville, 60-36, in the nightcap of the early season tournament. In the tournament's opener, Parkersburg South fought off a pesky, but out-manned Petersburg five by a 70-58 margin to reach the championship game in its first visit to the tournament.Parkersburg South 70, Petersburg 58 Second year Patriot head coach Scott Stephens wants people to know that if you think the only player the southsiders have is senior all-stater Jill Stephens, you better think again. "Jill got us that early lead, then Rachel (Wolfe) and Allison (Crislip) hit some big threes," said the coach. "We know the book on South is that if you can stop number 45 you can stop South. Hopefully, we can continue to have kids step up and do the job like they did here tonight." The victory, South's second straight of the early season, places the Patriots in the championship game at 7:45 p.m. where they will take on the host Yellowjackets. Meeting in the first game at 6 p.m. will be Petersburg, who lost in the championship game in Class AA last March, and Sissonville. The game started as if South, 2-0, would have little trouble with their opponent from the eastern panhandle as Jill Stephens tallied 11 of her team-high 27 points during the opening eight minutes as South raced out to a 13-point, 21-8, advantage. Petersburg, now 1-1, fought back in the second stanza and pulled to within eight points, 28-20, on a Katie Lambert jumper with 2:14 left until the intermission. However, five straight points by Rachel Wolfe, who finished with 18, and a bucket by Stephens again pushed the deficit to double digits, 35-22. A bucket by Tara Feaster cut the margin to 35-24 at the half.
