South girls blast Bridgeport, 64-22

By STEVE HEMMELGARN, Sports Writer

PARKERSBURG — No. 4 Class AAA Parkersburg South started slow, but got revved up offensively in the second half to blow out visiting and fifth-ranked Bridgeport 64-22 in the Patriots’ girls basketball season opener Tuesday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

The score was only 23-9 at the half in South’s favor, but the Patriots roared out to begin the second half, putting up almost as many points in the third quarter (22) as they managed the entire first half to surge into a commanding 45-16 advantage with still a period to play in the game.

Patriot head coach Scott Stephens attributed his team’s slow start, especially in the opening quarter, to ‘‘first-game nerves.’’ Nevertheless, he was pleased that the Patriots’ ‘‘defense was there all night long. The kids played great defense.’’

‘‘Great’’ would almost be an understatement, considering that South limited the Indians (0-1) to single-digit scoring in every quarter. That while the Patriots got rolling in the second stanza after the slow start, then exploded in the second half with 41 points to just 13 for Bridgeport to turn a once-close contest into a rout.

Kayla Ayers, bouncing back from a leg injury that made her playing time last season minimal, tallied a game-high 15 points to lead South, followed by Asia Greenleaf with 10 for the Patriots, Ali Morris with nine, Amber Shreeves with eight, and Danielle Floyd and Jessica Gilkeson with seven each.

For Bridgeport, Meredith Farkasousky netted nine points and Kasie Carbaccio seven.

The Indians’ lone lead in the game came at 2-0, but Morris’ bust-out steal for a tying layup preceded two Greenleaf hoops for a 6-2 lead at 4:33 of the first quarter, and the Patriots led 9-4 after a period.

Three straight buckets, one a trey, by Ayers capped an 8-0 South run to start the second quarter for a 17-4 margin at the 3:20 mark.

Bridgeport closed to 17-9 by 1:26, but Morris’ 3-point play with 40 seconds left and Shreeves’ 3-ball at 11.3 seconds gave the Patriots a 23-9 lead at the half.

And the Patriots continued to get better — and more efficient — offensively in the second half, beginning with a 7-0 burst to start the third quarter to up the margin to 30-9 and then ending the period with an 8-0 flourish, keyed by Floyd’s 4 points, for a 45-16 gap.

The lead had grown to 40, 62-22, with still over three minutes to play.

‘‘In the second half, I think we just kind of wore them down a little bit since we were deeper and they were young,’’ said Stephens.

So overall, Stephens said, ‘‘It was really a good start for us.’’
