Alexis Hornbuckle, the former SC, Tennessee and WNBA standout, dropped by the locker room before SC's Class AAA semifinal and after that, the second-seeded Black Eagles took flight, dispatching No. 3 Parkersburg South 60-50. A crowd of about 2,000 attended the state tournament matchup at the Civic Center.
SC (25-1), which has won 10 straight, will take on top-seeded North Marion (23-1) in the championship game at 7:15 tonight. It's the Black Eagles first appearance in the title game since 2005. Hornbuckle led the Black Eagles to back-to-back championships in 2003-2004.
Sophomore guard Brittany Gordon, who scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and came up with three steals for SC, re-injured her left knee and is questionable for tonight's title game. She went down with 2:34 left in the third quarter after trying to cut down a drive to the basket and was carried off the court by SC coach Gary Greene and assistant coach David Walker.
Gordon, the daughter of former Wheeling Park and University of Charleston standout guard Tony Gordon, partially tore her anterior cruciate ligament and completely tore her meniscus this past summer and has worn a brace all season.
"I think my team can do it,'' said Gordon, who came into the interview room in a wheelchair. "Hopefully, I'll get to play. I'm going to try. My knee just popped like it did during the summer. I'll ice it and try and work it out.''
With Hornbuckle's words still ringing in their ears, the Black Eagles ran out to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter Friday and the Patriots (20-4) could never catch up. SC senior guard Karley Walker punctuated the outburst by burying a 25-foot 3-pointer with two-tenths of a second left in the quarter.
"We had a talk with one of our role models before the game,'' said Allen, who turned in a team-high 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. "She was just telling us how it felt and I guess we wanted to see what it feels like to win a state championship, so we just went out there and played hard and never gave up.''
SC, which has only two players and just one starter 5-foot-10 or taller, outrebounded South 37-33, including 17-12 on the offensive end. The Patriots have starters listed at 5-7, 5-8, 5-9, 5-10 and 6-1. Because of their advantage on the boards, the Black Eagles tallied 17 second-chance points.
"Our kids showed a ton of heart again, especially when Brittany went down,'' said Greene. "It seemed like we picked it up a level defensively. Our kids did a great job inside. We worked on post offense that Parkersburg South ran and our kids just took it and ran with it.
"I'm so proud of them. It's unbelievable to get back to the championship game. It's a blessing to be with these kids and see them work hard every day. They've accomplished everything they've set out to accomplish. There's one thing left for us to try and get.''
SC senior point guard Sissy Wagner added 11 points, six boards, four assists and three steals and Walker finished with 10 points and four assists.
South cut its deficit to 47-37 on a putback by senior Asia Greenleaf with 7:23 to go in the fourth quarter, but SC reeled off six points in a row to push its advantage to 16 points (53-37) and was never threatened again.
"I thought we were getting ready to turn the corner,'' said South coach Scott Stephens, who guided the Patriots to a state title in 2006 and 2008. "When Gordon got hurt, it took away one of their weapons and I thought we were going to get back in it.''
SC, which didn't face North Marion during the season, has trailed the No. 1 Huskies in the Associated Poll since the preseason.
"They're a solid club,'' said Greene of North Marion. "I don't see a weakness in their lineup. They bring a couple of kids off the bench and they're just as solid as the kids that were out there. We've got our hands full and we'll do what we can. We'll play them for 32 minutes as hard as we can.''
