PARKERSBURG - In a battle of ranked Class AAA squads here Wednesday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center, host Parkersburg South had no problem with University, making short work of the Hawks, 74-48.

University sophomore leading scorer Angela Scotchel reached her average (15.5) by collecting a team-high 16 points, but it wasn't nearly enough as the No. 5 Hawks lost for the third straight time, falling to 14-4.

No. 7 Parkersburg South got solid production throughout the lineup, led by game-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds from junior pivot Jill Stephens.

The Patriots, now 13-6, used a 10-for-18 showing from the floor in the first quarter en route to a 27-10 advantage after the first eight minutes. Parkersburg South started the quarter by making 5-of-6 and ended it the same way.

Scott Stephens' squad came out ready from the outset, getting a quick offensive rebound and putback by Lauren Blair to open the scoring. She then hustled down the floor to tip away a long pass.

Blair, who finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists, ended the first flurry with a deuce at the 5:22 mark, making it 12-4. In the run, Heidi Floyd hit one of her three 3-pointers for part of her 18 counters while Brittany Harvey also had one, finishing with eight points.

Stephens scored 10 of her points in the first stanza and had 16 at the break.

Six straight points by University, four coming from Lauren Riggs, closed the deficit to 29-16 at 5:45 of the second. However, the Hawks never got closer than a baker's dozen the rest of the way.

Michelle Molinari's inside hoop from a Floyd assist with seven seconds to go gave the hosts a 63-35 lead after three periods.

Patriot Ashley Curry, who tallied five points, had a game-high seven assists.

The Patriots return home for a Saturday night encounter with rival Parkersburg.
