SOUTH 54, PARKERSBURG 27: Parkersburg South hit seven of its eight 3-point tries in the first half, taking a 28-14 lead and cruising past Parkersburg in the Class AAA Region 3 Section 1 tournament at South.
Asia Greenleaf scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Kelsi Halbert had 12 points and six assists. The Big Reds finished 9-15.
The Patriots (17-3) stay home to play Ripley at 7 p.m. for the section title.
South finds the range

PARKERSBURG - Blitzing Parkersburg High with six straight treys to start the second quarter, No. 3-ranked Parkersburg South overcame a sluggish first-period in rolling over the visiting Big Reds 54-27 in a Class AAA Region 3, Section 1 girls basketball semifinal Wednesday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.
The 17-3 Patriots, the section's top seed, will now face No. 13 Ripley (16-7), the third seed, in Friday's 7 p.m. sectional championship contest at Oldham after the Vikings took out second-seeded George Washington 57-56 in double overtime in Wednesday night's other semifinal.
PHS, finishing its season at 9-15, led 10-7 after a see-saw first quarter. But South not only connected on its first six shots from the floor to begin the second stanza, but all of them came from 3-point range, meaning the Patriots shot out to a 25-13 advantage midway through the quarter.
Pumping in the 3-balls in the South spurt were Kelsi Halbert with three and Sammy Hicks with two before Kristiana Hunt's trey at 3:58 completed the three-point barrage against a Big Red defense more intent on shutting off the Patriots' inside game.
Meanwhile, the South defense limited PHS to just four points in the second period to lead 28-14 at the half. That stinginess would continue throughout the game as the Big Reds managed just six points in the third and seven in the fourth. They had an opportunity in the third when the Patriots too put up only six points, but then let South record another 20-point period in the fourth to win by 27.
Asia Greenleaf and Halbert each tallied 12 points to pace the Patriots, who also got eight from Hunt, six each from Hicks and Jessica Moore, and five each from Hannah Maston and Mary Seagraves.
Tori Wilson's seven points led PHS a week after the Big Red senior pumped in seven treys in a loss to visiting South. PHS also got four points each from Janey Hall, Imani Ward and Tiffany Mahoney.
''Kenny (PHS head coach Kenny DeMoss) was backing off of us in the second quarter, letting us shoot the three and didn't think we could make 'em,'' said South head coach Scott Stephens. ''The opening jitters kind of went away when we started making 'em in the second quarter. But then they started the second half strong, so we had a timeout to get the kids focused again and they did a good job on their shooters the rest of the game.''
Stephens knows Ripley ''will be a handful'' Friday night after upsetting fifth-ranked George Washington Wednesday. The two teams didn't meet in the regular season, ''but we scrimmaged them, and I've watched them play a couple times,'' said Stephens, who was impressed with Alannah Sheets, ''a heck of a player,'' as well as ''Taylor Wilson inside and Samantha Hatcher, a three-point shooter.''
And has been the case more often than not this season for PHS, low offensive production ''was really our Achilles heel again tonight,'' said DeMoss, ''because I thought we played well defensively through three quarters. Our goal coming in was to shut down Seagraves, Moore and Greenleaf, and we held them all combined to two points at halftime. But we just couldn't put the ball in the hole. We were going to make the rest of their kids beat us, but they stepped up and knocked down those six threes in the second quarter. What can you do with that?''
