Patriots pound Wheeling Park

Parkersburg South’s five seniors made their final regular season appearance at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center here Friday night a memorable one as the visiting Wheeling Park girls faltered in the second half and lost, 74-57.

WPHS, which fell to 10-12 and next plays at home Tuesday against Brooke in sectional action, was led by Chantel Nevels’ 20 points while also getting 13 from Maggie Gompers and a dozen more from Katelynn Hackathorn.

Although Wheeling Park had the game squared at 30 going into intermission, the Patriots of head coach Scott Stephens proved to be too tough as the southsiders ended their regular season with a 17-5 mark and will return to action back at the ROAC Thursday night to face rival Parkersburg in sectional play.

“I thought everybody played well,” said Stephens, whose 17 regular seasons wins is the most in his three years as head coach. “It was fun to see five seniors together out there.”

Before the contest, 12th-graders Bethany Harbour, Brittany Meadows, Erica Shreeves, Allison Crislip and Stacy Houser were honored.

Even though Patriot junior Taylor Phillips finished with 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and made all six of her foul shots, the night belonged to the seniors.

Crislip, who had a dozen points on four triples, broke the Parkersburg South all-time single season career 3-point record late in what proved to be a pivotal third stanza.

Coming out of intermission, Sarah Harvey canned a trey and Phillips followed with eight straight points as the hosts led 41-30 with 4:50 to go in the period on a night when they connected on 11-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Wheeling Park, which turned the ball over 22 times but hit on half of its 18 trifectas, came out with three turnovers and two missed field goals in the first 1:48 of the third.

By the time Crislip drained a 3-pointer with less than two minutes to go in the third to break Heidi Floyd’s old 2003 mark of 52 triples in a season, Parkersburg South led 49-40 and was up 54-42 after three as Ali Morris hit a trey before the buzzer off a Meadows assist.

A pair of foul shots from Anne DeFruscio and a triple from Gompers to start the fourth cut the deficit to seven, but Wheeling Park never got any closer and the frustration came to a boil near the end of the contest when Renee Lance fouled out and was given a technical for taking her shirt off.

Shreeves, who added seven rebounds and three steals, tallied nine points as did Harbour. Houser didn’t score, but had a game-high four steals.

Phillips, who formerly played for the Crusaderettes of Parkersburg Catholic and helped them to the Class A state title a year ago, surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau.
