Waterford Tops South

By Joe Davies, Marietta Times

WATERFORD - Junior center Sina King collected for 29 points and 13 rebounds, while seniors Britany Brown and Jessi Drayer combined for 21 points Saturday night as Waterford avenged an earlier loss to Parkersburg South with a convincing 65-54 triumph at the Harry W. Cooper Annex gymnasium.

With the win, Waterford closed out the regular season with an 18-2 slate and avenged an earlier 59-57 to South back on Jan. 12 at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

"It was physical, and we knew it was going to be physical," said Brown after finishing the game with 12 points. "The first one was maybe even more physical so we knew what it was going to be like. It was going to be rough and we knew we had to take care of each other like we know how."

For Brown, it was perhaps more enjoyable as she got to test the ankle which she injured earlier in the month against Trimble.

"It was Senior Night, so I had to play," she said. "Even if I was hurt, I had to suck it up."

The physical nature of the game was reflected in the fact that South was whistled for 24 fouls with three Lady Patriots - Jessica Moore, Mary Seagraves and Danielle Floyd - fouling out. It could have been frustration showing through as Parkersburg South (15-3) suffered losses on back-to-back nights. On Friday evening, the Lady Patriots, ranked No. 1 among the Class AAA elite of West Virginia, took a 71-60 loss against No. 2 North Marion.

"It was rough," Waterford coach Jerry Close said, noting that King took a glancing hit from Floyd across the jaw and nose and Lauren Bosner came out with a bloody nose at one point. "It was definitely a rough game, but that's what you're going to see come tournament time. It's rough, and we've got to adapt to it, and we did a nice job of that tonight."

The Lady Wildcats took advantage by converting 21-of-32 free throws to South's 7-of-20 effort.

Other than a 2-2 tie in the early going, Waterford led the entire way. The Lady Wildcats opened up a 10-point lead late in the second period.

South closed to within two (30-28) three minutes into the third period as Seagraves hooked one in from inside the lane to cap a 7-0 run. A rebound basket by King got Waterford back on track and the Lady Wildcats extended their lead back out to six by the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, King was repeatedly tested at the foul line and converted 9-of-10 attempts.

Asia Greenleaf paced South with 17 points, while Floyd managed 16 points and Kelsi Halbert added 10 points.

The defensive-oriented game also featured 55 turnovers - 31 for Waterford and 24 for Parkersburg South.

"We did turn it over a lot tonight... A lot more than normal," Close said. "But that's what it's about. If and when you can overcome your mistakes to get to be a better team, our girls did that tonight."
