South girls take revenge on ‘Cats
By Steve Hemmelgarn, Parkersburg News & Sentinel
PARKERSBURG - It was a top-10 intrastate duel that featured two of the best girls basketball teams in the Mid-Ohio Valley, and they didn't disappoint the fans in attendance Saturday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.
When the dust had cleared, host Parkersburg South emerged victorious 59-53 over Waterford by virtue of outscoring the Wildcats 22-16 in the fourth quarter.
The win boosted the Patriots, ranked third in Class AAA in West Virginia, to 14-3 while the loss dropped Waterford, which opens Ohio Division IV sectional tournament play Saturday at Athens High School, to 17-3. The 'Cats are currently tied for ninth in D-IV in the Ohio ratings.
The Wildcats, who had previously this season downed the Patriots 64-49 at Waterford, held leads of five points twice in the first quarter before taking a 17-11 advantage after the opening eight minutes of action on Lauren Bosner's 7-footer with 7.8 seconds left in the period.
Then Waterford tallied seven of the initial nine points of the second stanza to extend its lead to 11 at 24-13 at the 5:26 mark on a trey by Brooke Drayer. But South finished the first half on a 12-4 run in the final four minutes to narrow the gap to just three, 30-27, at intermission. Hannah Maston and Kristiana Hunt each pumped in 3-balls in the South spurt while Patriot center Jessica Moore, who scored a game-high 22 points, notched the other six points on three baskets - the last with 11.8 seconds remaining after taking a feed from Mary Seagraves in the lane.
South finally knotted the count at 37 with 1:09 to go in the third quarter on a Maston-to-Seagraves connection on the baseline for a hoop. That was the same score that opened the fourth quarter, and after ties at 39, 41, 43 and 45 in the first half of the final period, the Patriots put together a 7-0 run to surge in front, 52-45, with only 2:13 to play. Sammy Hicks drained a trey from the left wing at 3:50 for a 48-45 South lead, then Moore added two clutch hoops - the second off a baseline feed after an offensive rebound by Asia Greenleaf.
South point guard Kelsi Halbert then sank five of six free throws in the first half of the last minute of play to stave off any Wildcat comeback.
After Moore in the South scoring column were Halbert with 10 points and Seagraves with nine, while Waterford center Sina King, who had 26 points in the earlier win over the Patriots, had only 15 this time around as the 'Cats got 17 from Emily Brown and 10 from Kim Barker.
