Morris ties school record with 10 steals

By KERRY PATRICK, News & Sentinel
PARKERSBURG —Ali Morris couldn’t keep her hands out of the cookie jar, and on the basketball court that proved to be a wonderful thing.

The senior from Parkersburg South was the master of thievery and tied a school record with 10 steals as the Patriots defeated Tyler Consolidated 81-40 Monday night at Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

“Ali is an exceptional kid who works hard,” Parkersburg South coach Scott Stephens said after his Class AAA second-ranked Patriots improved to 19-1. “She sees the floor and reads defenses so well. She is going to be able to play at the next level, and that’s one of the reasons. She is just so unbelievably quick.

“She is like a ghost. She is there and then she is somewhere else.”

Morris tied a 25-year-old record shared by Rose Leak and Jenny Leavitt in the second half as Parkersburg South widened the gap to as many as 44 points. Morris just missed a double-double after finishing with nine points to go with five rebounds.

“In the fourth quarter, I was aware of the record — I was trying to get another steal to break it,” Morris said.

Tyler Consolidated, ranked No. 4 in Class AA, played without its leading scorer, Meghan Wiseman who missed school because of the flu.

The Silver Knights (16-4) fell behind 10-2 but behind senior Cameron Yoho rallied back to within 17-13 in the final 17 seconds of the first quarter.

Yoho finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.

“We didn’t do a very good job on (Yoho), but she is a heck of a player,” Stephens said. “We were chasing her. We didn’t play well on Cameron, but she is an athlete.

“They didn’t have their other big stud — Wiseman wasn’t here, so Cameron knew she had to carry the load, and she stepped up and played really well.”

With the Silver Knights hanging around and trailing 21-15, the Patriots put on a surge by scoring the next 17 points. Kayla Ayers led the charge by scoring nine of her team-high 17 points.

Parkersburg South’s lead at halftime stood at 40-21. That’s when the Patriots dealt the fatal blow. They forced 13 turnovers and outscored the Silver Knights 26-4. In the third quarter alone, Morris recorded four steals.

“I wasn’t very happy with the girls at halftime because of their effort on defense in the first half, but they kicked it up at the beginning of the third quarter and that kind of took care of the game for us,” Stephens said.

Mary Seagraves came off the bench to score 12 points for the Patriots. The Parkersburg South reserves accounted for 34 points.

Contributing 10 points for Tyler Consolidated was point guard Kylee Evans, who also dished out six assists.

“South is good — they are quicker than our guards,” Tyler Consolidated coach Kent Yoho said. “We probably had more turnovers than we points at one time. (Even with Meghan Wiseman), we would have to play exceptionally well to beat that team.”
