Charleston Gazette
Parkersburg South outmanned George Washington on the boards in taking a 55-50 girls basketball victory Monday in the Big Atlantic Classic at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. South (12-3), which is ranked sixth in the Class AAA Associated Press poll, held a massive 53-31 rebounding advantage. South still need to convert 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off No. 3 GW (14-3). South was 20-of-26 for the game at the charity stripe while GW was 8-of-17. Jessie Moore scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for South and Asia Greenleaf chipped in 15 points and 10 boards. Dri Nazario and Kiara Tyler scored 17 points apiece for GW. South will play the winner of North Marion-Huntington at 4 p.m. Saturday, and GW will face the loser at 4 p.m. Friday.
Parkersburg South uses its size to top GW
Big Atlantic Classic: No. 6 South girls took down 22 more rebounds than No. 3 Patriots
BECKLEY, W.Va. - Parkersburg South's girls basketball program continues to make its living from doing the little things right.
The Class AAA sixth-ranked Patriots took advantage of their size in the second half against No. 3 George Washington to the tune of a 30-13 rebounding advantage to secure a 55-50 come-from-behind win Monday at the Big Atlantic Classic.
South (13-3), which trailed 32-26 at halftime, led the overall rebounding count 53-31.
"Our goal was to try to get the ball inside, and we started to get that going in the second half," South Coach Scott Stephens said. "We did that, and in doing that we got a couple of their kids in foul trouble, which I thought was the biggest key."
George Washington (14-3) built its halftime lead by forcing six second-quarter turnovers and converting them into solid transition play. Senior guard Kiera Tyler was the biggest beneficiary of the first-half showing, as she hit three 3-pointers and had 13 points.
But as GW built its lead, it did so in a manner that seemed to be robbing Peter to pay Paul. By the end of the first half, three GW starters - junior Dri Nazario and sophomores Alexxis Tunstalle and Alexa Peoples - had two personal fouls apiece.
"Normally we go eight deep and we don't have that kind of foul problem," GW Coach Jamie LaMaster said. "But (South's) a highly rated opponent with some good inside play, so basically we were getting to the play a little late getting to spots and that was leading to the problems."
South senior Jessica Moore, a 5-foot-9 forward, wreaked havoc in the paint after halftime, when she grabbed 11 of her game-high 17 rebounds. Moore was 10-of-18 shooting, 5-of-6 from the foul line and had a game-high 25 points.
Senior center Asia Greenleaf (6-1) had 15 points and 10 rebounds for South.
"That's what we need from those two," Stephens said. "We've got to have them play like that, and I think we did a pretty good job on defense this evening."
South took a 39-38 lead into the fourth quarter when senior guard Kelsi Halbert hit the back end of a two-shot opportunity with no time remaining on the third-quarter clock. Then South built a 46-41 lead when Moore spun in the paint before going to the rack to score a bucket that was tougher than the senior made it look with 4:09 left.
With Tunstalle on the bench after drawing her fourth foul with 2:29 left in the third, GW struggled to put points on the board. Nazario, the team's leading scorer on the season, did not score a point in the second half until just before Moore's move.
But it was Moore's bucket that led to GW's last stand. Nazario scored five consecutive points and tied the game at 46-46 with a 3-pointer at the 3:08 mark. South's Mary Seagraves answered with a 3 of her own on South's return trip down the court to give her team another three-point lead, but Nazario scored again and Tunstalle gave GW a 50-49 lead with 1:09 to go when she grabbed a steal and canned a pull-up jumper from 15 feet.
Again, it was a foul that did in GW. Moore was sent to the line with 41.6 seconds remaining, where she made both attempts and gave South the lead for good.
South made 20-of-26 shots from the foul line, where GW was just 8 of 17. LaMaster said that was his team's undoing.
"That's about where we've been all year," he said. "Tomorrow we'll go back to work, get on the machine at school and get ready for South Charleston (Wednesday)."
Tyler and Nazario had 17 points each to lead GW, which plays the loser of Wednesday night's game between the 2009 Class AAA state title game rematch of Huntington and North Marion in the Big Atlantic Classic girls consolation at 9 a.m. Saturday.
