'Jackets fall to South By JOE DAVIS, Parkersburg News & Sentinel
WILLIAMSTOWN -It was much too close for Scott Stephens' comfort. Williamstown rewarded itself by playing patiently on offense and forcing the issue, particularly late in the game, only to come up short, 38-37, against Parkersburg South Thursday evening. "We wanted to play a decreased-possession game," Williamstown coach Fred Sauro said. "If you play a decreased-possession game, then I think you have a little better shot to be in position we were in."The Yellowjackets overcame a 12-point deficit and took a 37-36 lead with 1:36 remaining as Molly Kiger assisted Alisha Starcher on the baseline to cap an amazing 10-0 Williamstown run. Jill Stephens scored the game's final bucket with a layup off a feed by Heidi Floyd with 51 seconds remaining, the drama was far from over. A jumper by Ann Seufer caromed off the front of the rim to Ashley Curry. South spent a time out and Kiger ended up stealing the inbounds pass when play resumed. A breakdown in communications between the officials and the official scorers resulted in time being called and the play was reset. "Stuff like that happens and you can't control it," Kiger said. With less that 16 seconds remaining, South worked the ball into the low post with Stephens feeding Lisa Tackett, only to have her shot blocked out of bounds by Kiger. When play resumed, Floyd was fouled with 7.4 seconds left and missed the front end of the one-and-one with Williamstown gaining the rebound as the ball went out of bounds. Seufer took the inbounds pass and dribbled into the front court and got off a rushed shot that caromed off the rim and the glass. Before Alisha Starcher could collect the rebound and put a follow-up shot back up on the rim and in, the final buzzer had sounded. Kiger finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, while Stephens, who had been averaging 24.3 points per game, finished with 13 points and eight boards for South. "We basically figured that we had to play better," said Starcher. "We picked our game up. Everyone knew how bad we wanted to win and we played our best game so far." Kiger concurred, saying, "It was a great game. We did a lot better than I what I thought. We really went out and executed and did what coach told us to do."
