Wheeling - Mount de Chantal converted 1-2 free throws with 1.2 seconds remaining to defeat Class AAA No. 4 Parkersburg South, 53-54. It was an exciting end to a game that saw 8 lead changes in the final quarter, making it one of the more memorable games in recent South history.
With a half dozen Division-1 college scouts in attendance, Parkersburg South scored the first 9 points of the game and held nationally ranked Mount de Chantal without a field goal for the first five minutes of the contenst. Mount would end the quarter on a 7-0 run, trailing 9-7 after the first quarter of play.
After South led by 8 points at halftime, 24-16, Mount de Chantal took the their first lead of the night at 36-37 with 7:37 remaining in the final period. Ten seconds later, Heidi Floyd would steal the ball just past mid-court and lay it in to give South the 38-37 advantage with 7:27 to play.
Mount managed to take the lead back at 6:26, but once again Floyd responded with a lay-up on the other end to give South a 40-39 lead.
At the 4:58 mark, Mount de Chantal regained the lead, 40-41.
Jill Stephens scored on an inbounds lay-up to give South the advantage 42-41. After a defensive stop on the other end, Michele Molinari scored her only basket of the night driving through the lane and drawing the foul from the defender for a 3-point play at the 4:08 mark. The score gave South a 45-41 lead.
The Mount quickly recovered, converting an offensive putback at the 3:22 mark for a 45-46 lead. After a Patriot turnover, Mount de Chantal scored again to take the lead to 45-48.
At the 2:25 mark, Lisa Tackett drew a foul on the Mount defense and converted one of two charity tosses to cut the lead to 46-48. Another basket by the Mount made the score 46-50 with 2:08 to play in the game. After missing an opportunity to score at 2:01 when two free-throws were missed, the Patriots didn't fold .
South denied the Mount on the other end of the floor and Lisa Tacket scored on the other end and drew a foul at 1:14 to make the score 48-50. The free-throw was missed but the Lady Patriots kept possession alive with an offensive rebound. Jill Stephens would give South their final lead of the night with a putback at 1:09, 51-50.
The Mount quickly scored an old fashioned 3-point play on the other end to re-take the lead, 53-51 with 0:54 to play. The Lady Patriots were done however, as Heidi Floyd would score on a putback at 0:45 to tie the game at 53-53.
After holding the Mount without a score on their next possession, South turned the ball over - one of 32 Patriot turnovers on the evening - after the sideline inbounds pass with 0:24 to play.
Mount de Chantal ate the clock down to the final 1.2 seconds when Popovic drove the lane and drew a foul on Stephens who appeared to have blocked the shot. The first free-throw attempt rimmed out, but the second was good.
The Patriots inbounds pass was deflected as time expired.
The Patriots were led in scoring by Jill Stephens with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Heidi Floyd added 10 points and 5 assists.
