A senior night to remember.
Not only did Marietta honor its seven seniors in their next-to-last home
game of their varsity career, but the Tigers also manufactured their
first-ever win over Parkersburg South in girls basketball, a 65-58
victory Tuesday night at Sutton Gymnasium.
Parkersburg South, ranked No. 3 in the state of West Virginia in Class
AAA, entered the contest having won four in a row over the Tigers during
their history.
“This means that we beat a good team tonight and we have the opportunity
to win our league if we play this way over our next three games,” MHS
coach Mark Hannuksela said. “Parkersburg South is the kind of team we
see in the Northeast district. If you can beat a team like this then you
should have all the confidence that you can win at home, on the road,
against strong competition and against mediocre competition.”
Parkersburg South senior Taylor Phillips, who has signed a national
letter of intent with Bucknell University, struggled from the floor and
made just 4-of-22 shots from the field. She finished with 10 points and
15 rebounds.
As a team, the Patriots shot just 29 percent (18-of-62).
“”We’ll just try to build from this,” Parkersburg South coach Scott
Stephens said. “It might not be a terrible thing to lose this ballgame.
We’ll refocus — this lets us know we’re not invincible and maybe we’re
reading too much of our own press.
“We will just learn from our mistakes tonight and try to get better.”
South broke out of the gates quickly and raced to a 9-2 lead. Marietta’s
pressure then started to take effect and the Tigers outscored the
Patriots 17-4 over the next five minutes. Point guard Bre Davis and
reserve Tia Rose ignited the Tigers by accounting for 12 points during
that stretch.
“I thought Tia gave us a nice spark off the bench right away,”
Hannuksela said. “Her energy is infectious and once we got a little
energy, we were good after that.”
Despite picking up her second foul and taking a permanent on the bench
for the rest of the first half at the 3:48 mark of the second period,
Davis contributed seven points and five assists during the time she was
on the floor. For the game, the senior finished with 14 points and seven
assists.
“Bre and Tia are energy players and we have so many of them, but we feed
off their energy,” Hannuksela said. “Bre can do it from her spot and Tia
can do it from her spot on the floor, or even from the bench. They are
just people to get us going.
“Bre played awfully well. She got the ball to people where they could do
something with it, and even took the ball to the basket a couple of
times. Those are things that will inspire a team when you play with a
lot of heart.”
Parkersburg South took a brief lead at 25-24, but Marietta concluded the
second quarter with an 11-2 run. During that spurt, senior Jamie
McKitrick scored nine of her team-high 17 points.
In the second half, Danielle Floyd kept South within striking distance
and scored seven of her team-high 13 points in the third quarter. The
Patriots finally overtook the Tigers when Kim Stephens knocked down an
8-footer from the paint to put her club in front 53-52.
Again it was Rose stepping up with back-to-back buckets from the same
spot on the floor from 12 feet away. Rose finished with 16 points.
South’s Ali Morris sank two free throws to tie the game at 56 with just
under three minutes remaining.
Another senior for Marietta stepped in the clutch as Allie Wallis hit
nothing but the bottom of the net on a 3-point try from the left corner
of the court to give Marietta the lead for good at 59-56. A few
turnovers and another couple of missed shots later by South and all of a
sudden Marietta was in front 65-56.
“Marietta is a good team — they are quick,” Coach Scott Stephens said.
“We missed a lot of easy shots that we should not have missed. I’m a
little disappointed some of our girls didn’t want the basketball with
the pressure that Marietta put on us early, but we corrected that at
halftime. I thought we played much better in the second half, but we
didn’t come away with a win.”
