The Patriots, who led 36-27 heading into the final eight minutes, preserved their advantage as Kelsi Halbert sank seven of eight free throws, Asia Greenleaf went 4-for-4 and Sammy Hicks 2-for-2. The result was South's 11th win versus just two losses. Mary Seagraves led the Patriots with 14 points while Halbert and Jessica Moore had nine points each. Zanesville, which fell to 13-3, was led by Kailee Howell with 16 points. South travels to Marietta on Friday.
Lady Devils rally falls short against Parkersburg South By Kreg Robinson, Zanesville Times-Recorder ZANESVILLE — Can we play five quarters? The Zanesville Lady Devils are wondering that as they spent three quarters clawing away at an early deficit only to run out of time in a 51-44 loss to the Parkersburg (W.Va.) South Tuesday night at Winland Gymnasium. The Lady Patriots came out of the gate red-hot. Jessica Moore opened the game with an inside bucket to give Parkersburg the early advantage. Kelsi Halbert and Mary Seagraves added shots to extend the Lady Patriots’ lead. Zanesville (13-3) began the game slowly, unable to make shots and turning the ball over. Kailee Howe tried to keep the Lady Devils in the game, making a jumper to cut the Parkersburg lead to 6-4. However, the Lady Patriots (11-2) kept up the fast pace as Moore nailed their next seven points, giving Parkersburg a 15-6 lead. A triple by Seagraves finished the first-quarter onslaught, putting the Patriots up 18-8 after one. The Lady Devils would spend the rest of the game trying to make up that deficit. Zanesville coach Howard Twiggs felt that he knew the Lady Patriots’ tendencies, but their high-percentage, first-quarter performance hurt his team. “They shot well in the first. They really got out on us,” he said. “We saw them earlier. We knew how good they were. They are ranked number four in West Virginia. They like to shoot 3s and use their post game. I think their size wore us down, and their post play hurt us.” Twiggs made adjustments at the half, but the Lady Devils were unable to make up the difference. “Their 2-3 match up in the zone bothered us. We were unable to get any rhythm on offense,” he said. “We tried to go quick on offense in the third, to not use as much half-court offense and work on our transition game and we nearly came back on them.” The Lady Devils made a run at Parkersburg early in the fourth, cutting the Lady Patriot lead to 37-31 after quick buckets by Howe and Aisha Reese. However, the Lady Devils were unable to sustain their offensive momentum, turning the ball over on four consecutive possessions, while the Lady Patriots shot solidly from the foul line to push their lead back up to 41-31. The Lady Devils had no quit in them as Howe and Dani Weekley finally achieved some offensive rhythm for Zanesville and Weekley’s three-pointer made the score 47-44 with a minute left in the game. That was as close as Zanesville would get, as Halbert was perfect from the free-throw line, going 6-6, to close out the game. Twiggs feels that his team can overcome this loss and keep building on their strong season. “We are 13-3 with four games left. I told the girls they have two choices, we can grow from this and get ready to learn for the tournament or we can fold up the tent and go home,” he said. “I think we can respond and finish strong.” The Lady Devils were led by Howe with 16 points and two assists. Seagraves paced Parkersburg with 14 points and five rebounds. Parkersburg won the reserve game 41-32. Paige Hardwick and Kylee Clark led Zanesville with nine points each, while Kierra Bridges led Parkersburg with 10.
