Marietta girls fall to South

PARKERSBURG —
Asia Greenleaf and Kayla Ayers were the enforcers in the post as
Parkersburg South defeated Marietta 69-57
Tuesday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.
Behind a combined 37 points and 20 rebounds from the
Parkersburg South duo, the No. 1-ranked team in Class AAA
remained unbeaten at 14-0. Greenleaf accounted for 20 points, 10
rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
“We were just a little more athletic than Marietta was inside,”
Parkersburg South coach Scott Stephens said. “Asia played maybe the best
game she has played all season.”
The Patriots snapped Marietta’s five-game win streak and dropped the
Tigers to 10-7. The battle of the boards was non-existent as the Tigers
were outdone 47-27 in the rebounding department.
“We have an issue of jumping with people instead of boxing out,”
Marietta coach Tom Wildt said. “We’re not very tall, so when we try to
jump with people who are tall and can jump then we have issues.
“We had a lot of standing around and watching.”
The Patriots nearly ran the Tigers out of the gym in the first three
minutes of the game and led 12-2. During one spurt, Marietta turned the
ball over on four consecutive possessions.
Marietta began to peck away beginning with three free throws from LeAnne
Ross. The sophomore was also left alone for two 3-pointers, then capped
the Tigers’ first-quarter scoring with a left-handed layup. She was
fouled on the play and converted the three-point play to force an 18-18
deadlock with 21 seconds showing.
Ross, Marietta’s leading scorer this season, finished with a game-high
24 points, but would not sink another 3-pointer the rest of the contest.
As a team, the Tigers went 0-of-9 from beyond the arc after the first
quarter.
“We kind of fell asleep on Ross in the first quarter,” Stephens said.
“We weren’t paying any attention to her and giving her wide open looks.
She burnt us pretty good, but we adjusted.”
With the score still tied at 20, Parkersburg South began to put some
distance between itself and Marietta. Over the final seven minutes of
the first half and the first five minutes of the second half, the
Patriots outscored the Tigers 30-7 and pushed the gap to 50-27.
Marietta began to make some headway in the latter stages of the third
quarter and sliced the deficit to 54-36 when Ross stole a pass and made
a layup at the other end of the floor just as time expired.
“Marietta is a good basketball team — their pressure bothered us and I
didn’t think it would,” Stephens said.
In the first 15 seconds of the fourth quarter, Greenleaf took a charge
and the Patriots were off and running again. Parkersburg South scored
eight straight points to produce its largest lead of the game at 62-36
with 5:39 remaining in regulation.
“I told the girls afterwards that this was the best team we have played
all year,” Wildt said. “It ended up 12 points, which was respectable.”
