Patriot girls roll past Morgantown

PARKERSBURG - No. 4 Parkersburg South outpointed visiting Morgantown 15-3 in the fourth quarter to break open a closely-contested girls basketball game in rolling to a 20-point, 58-38, win over the ninth-ranked Mohigans Friday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center in a Class AAA top-10 matchup.

''The girls just played hard,'' said South head coach Scott Stephens. ''We had something to prove, and we wanted to forget about Waterford as quick as we could'' Stephens said, in reference to the Patriots' 64-49 loss at Waterford Wednesday night.

But Friday back in the friendly confines of Rod Oldham, the Patriots got a 22-point, four-trey performance from Mary Seagraves as well as a 17-point, 11-rebound effort from Asia Greenleaf, who is rounding into shape this season after a knee injury.

''She's starting to round into form - tonight was probably the best game she had yet,'' said Stephens of Greenleaf, a key inside player for the Patriots. ''So hopefully, that's going to continue to improve.''

After a tight first quarter ended with South ahead 13-9, Seagraves canned three treys in the second stanza while Greenleaf and Jessica Moore each added two baskets inside as the Patriots pulled out to a 32-24 advantage by halftime.

After an even 11-11 third period, South turned a 10-point cushion (48-38) at the 4:40 mark of the fourth quarter into its 20-point margin of victory by tallying the final 10 points of the game, with Greenleaf and Seagraves each notching four points in the spurt.

''Seagraves was just unconscious tonight; she shot the ball extremely well,'' said Stephens. ''Defensive pressure gave them some problems and I have to give our defense some credit for that because Morgantown always shoots the ball extremely well.

''And with us having both Moore and Greenleaf inside, that gave us an advantage over their one inside player.''

For the game, Sammy Hicks added 10 points for South (9-2), which plays a makeup game at Winfield tonight.

The now 8-5 Mohigans were led by Lauren Shoemaker with 11 points and Hannah Strosnider with nine.
