the Patriots, who travel to Warren Local on Friday night.
In the JV game, South and Morgantown hooked up in a battle of unbeatens
with the Patriots (9-0) emerging with a 57-50 win.

MHS rally falls short
Mohigans fall to top-ranked Patriots
BY ERIC HANLON The Dominion Post
The state’s biggest girls’ high school basketball game of
the year was played Friday Night when third-ranked Morgantown hosted
top-ranked and undefeated Parkersburg South.
In the battle of two of the state’s top teams, the
Mohigans were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to the
Patriots, 68-60.
The Mohigans trailed the entire game, but with the help of
a late rally, they nearly pulled off the improbable comeback.
“His [MHS head coach Allan Collins] teams never quit and
that was no different today,” PSHS head coach Scott Stevens said.
“We don’t get out of here very often with a win so this was pretty
fun.”
As fun as it was for the Stevens, it was just the opposite
type of game for Collins and his team.
“That’s a tough loss. I told the team after the game that
the first step in winning, is believing you can win,” Collins said.
“I’m not sure they believed until late in the game. Once that
happened, it got close.”
In fact, it got really close. At halftime, the Mohigans
trailed by 13 and by as many as 15 at one point. But the second half
was a different story.
The Mohigans outscored the Patriots in the third and
fourth quarters, but even then, they could not seem to catch up
enough to make it close.
“You have to give them credit,” Collins said. “Every time
we got something going they would comeback and hit a few big threes
and we’d be right back where we started.”
Even with the Patriots answering time and time again, with
four minutes left in the game, the Mohigans hadn’t given up yet.
Trailing 64-50, MHS made one last attempt at tying things up.
Over the next three minutes, the Mohigans reeled off a
10-0 run and pulled within four points, only to fall just short as
they Patriots would not
miss from the foul line.
“Being down 16 or 17 and coming back is a lot different
then coming back from being down seven or eight. We just ran out of
time,” Collins said. “One more turnover and we would’ve been within
two, and I still had a timeout left. Who knows what would have
happened then.”
“We couldn’t handle their press at the end of the game,”
Stevens
said. “You have to tip their hat to them. They seemed like a
different team in the second half and started hitting some shots.”
With the win, the Patriots move to 10-0 on the season and
more than likely their number one ranking will be in tact after
beating another highly touted team like the Mohigans.
The loss drops the Mohigans to 6-3 on the year and things
won’t get much easier as they will host sixthranked University next
week.
“If
nothing else, this game should help us prepare for next week when we
play University,” Collins said. “They have similar speed to
[Parkersburg] South and fortunately we know a lot of their tendencies.
But they’re a good team too and it won’t be easy.”
Leading
scorers for the Mohigans were senior Cynthia Fullard, who scored 16
points and recorded six steals on the night, and sophomore Melissa
Wells, who came off the bench to score 13.
