South upends crosstown rival

By STEVE HEMMELGARN, Parkersburg News & Sentinel

PARKERSBURG — No. 3-ranked and defending Class AAA state girls basketball champion Parkersburg South, keyed by Taylor Phillips’ 15 points in a 29-point third quarter, rolled over city cross-town rival Parkersburg 66-28 Tuesday night at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

Phillips may have been the lone double-digit point-producer in the first of the usual three South-PHS meetings this season with 18, but the now 8-2 Patriots put 10 players in the scoring column as the game turned into a rout in the second half.

Sub Amber Shreeves added nine points and Sarah Harvey, playing on a tender ankle, netted eight. For PHS, now 3-7, Kim Dent led with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

The contest was close — for a while — until the Patriots snapped a 2-2 tie on a basket by Kim Stephens and back-to-back treys by Danielle Floyd and Harvey for a 10-2 advantage, then closed the first quarter with a 3-ball by Kara Longwell and Harvey feeding Tara Collins on the baseline for a bucket at 1:17 for a 15-6 lead.

The second period was about even, but South zoomed ahead by 36 (56-20) after three quarters to put the game away. Phillips sparked South’s third-quarter burst with a personal 11-0 run on a trey, backcourt steal for a field goal and consecutive three-point plays as the Patriots moved out to a 38-16 gap by the 4:26 mark.

But another 11-0 run, this time unique for having a trio of three-point plays, put the Patritors up by 31 to make the final period academic.

Stephens had a traditional three-point play, followed by a Harvey trey and then Floyd’s free throw with Phillips notching a rebound bucket off Floyd’s second foul-shot miss, and finally two free throws by Phillips to complete her 15-point quarter.

‘‘In the third quarter, we just came out and played very, very well,’’ said South head coach Scott Stephens. ‘‘I’d like to see us be able to play four quarters like that in a row every game. Every once in a while, we get a really nice quarter, but we need to develop some consistency where we can play like that all the time.’’

Against the Big Reds, who committed 32 turnovers in the game, ‘‘I think we frustrated them a lot with pressure on the ball,’’ said Stephens. ‘‘They were having a hard time getting into their offense with our defensive pressure. That’s probably the key to why they didn’t score more points. And our girls did play good defense — and especially good defense in the third quarter.’’

For PHS head coach Don Stansberry, the game showed ‘‘we know what we need to work on — being able to handle the ball and staying calm under pressure.’’

Plus, he noted, ‘‘the first six shots we took, five of them were layup-type shots and we missed them.

‘‘I think we’re much better players than we show, but we’ve just got to get out of the panic mode and be able to just come out and show that they can play,’’
