South girls notch 500th
win

PARKERSBURG — Parkersburg
South’s 86-55 girls basketball victory over visiting St. Albans Saturday
night was sweet for two reasons.
The win, accomplished with a 52-point second half capped by a 36-point
fourth quarter, marked the 500th Patriot girls cage win in their 34th
season of varsity competition. The South girls have won 66 percent of
their games.
Also, key to Saturday’s triumph over the Red Dragons was 6-foot senior
Kayla Ayers, who with her 30-point performance on 10 field goals
including two treys and 8-of-12 at the foul line, became the first South
player to score 30 in a game since Taylor Phillips in the 2006 Class AAA
sectional.
But despite the final score, the first three quarters were anything but
easy for the fourth-ranked (Class AAA) Patriots, still perfect on the
season at 9-0, who led only 50-40 after three periods against the game
Red Dragons (5-3).
In fact, St. Albans held a 10-9 lead after the opening stanza. But in
the second quarter, South went on a 14-3 run, fueled by Ayers, to surge
in front 23-15 at the 4:04 mark. Then after back-to-back treys by
Brittany Crawford (18 points) and Kayla Gillenwater (14 points), the
Patriots ended the first half with a 11-2 spurt, engineered by Amber
Shreeves, Ayers and Ali Morris, for a 34-23 lead at the break.
After an even third period, Danielle Floyd and Ayers each tallied 11
points in the fourth quarter as South ran away and hid from the Red
Dragons.
Morris finished with 20 points for the game, while Floyd netted 18 for
South, which plays next at Parkersburg High at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
After ‘‘not playing very well for the first half, we tried to not let
Crawford and Gillenwater get as many good looks at the basket or
wide-open shots as they were early in the first half,’’ said South head
coach Scott Stephens, whose team nevertheless dominated on the boards.
‘‘We’re pleased to be 9-0 at this point,’’ added Stephens. ‘‘But we’ve
got to keep on building on what we’ve done so far.’’
