VINCENT—Warren
gave it everything it had for 32 minutes against Parkersburg South, but
the Warriors faltered under defensive pressure at the end and allowed
the defending West Virginia Class AAA champion to escape with a 61-53
victory.
Warren exhibited a brilliant display of shooting in the first half and
built a 36-27 halftime lead. The Warriors shot 12-of-25 from the field
and 6-of-12 from beyond the 3-point line in the first two periods of
action.
In the second half, South’s relentless defensive pressure would ignite a
furious comeback. The Patriots’ offense would also erupt in the fourth
quarter for 24 points to cap the resurgence.
Warren coach Kenny DeMoss said his team played well through stages, but
failing to finish the game has plagued the Warriors more than once this
season.
“We are capable of playing well, but we just can’t seem to play four
consistent quarters,” DeMoss said. “When teams turn up the pressure we
have to react instead of panicking.”
In both the first and second quarters, Warren’s offensive production was
triggered by a three-headed monster. That monster consisted of Danielle
Fries, Kristin Cozzens and Mallory Brooks.
These three players accounted for 35 of Warren’s 36 first-half points.
For the game these girls also scored 50 of Warren’s 53 total points.
Cozzens was spectacular in the first half scoring 17 points, which
included four 3-pointers, but she failed to score a single point in the
second half.
Fries once again found her shooting touch from deep, and also splashed
down four 3-pointers. Fries scored 16 points for the game. Brooks was a
breath of fresh air in terms of penetrating to the lane. She knocked
down several jumpers and lay-ups to score 17 total points.
In the second quarter Warren was leading just 27-25, but Cozzens got
scorching hot from beyond the arc and drained three consecutive
3-pointers to give the Warriors a 36-25 advantage with 1:47 left in the
second quarter.
At the start of the second half South’s deep bench started to become a
factor. It became clear that the Patriots’ main objective was to run
their opponent up and down the floor and wear them down.
South also enacted full-court pressure and it slowly began to take its
toll on the Warriors. Warren began to fumble the ball and as a result
committed several turnovers.
A Kara Longwell 3-pointer tied the game for South at 46 with 5:35
remaining in the game. Warren retained the lead on a Brooks jumper for
the corner. But a pair of Tayler Phillips free throws tied the game up
again at 48.
Fries fired a 3-pointer at the basket that caught nothing but the bottom
of the net for a 51-48 Warren lead. But Philips answered for South at
the other end with a trey of her own.
Phillips supplied the offensive power in the Patriots’ fourth-quarter
rally. She scored 11 fourth-quarter points and led the team in scoring
with 23 for the game. Philips also provided a spark from deep, canning
three 3-pointers. Danielle Floyd also scored in double digits for South
with 12 points.
Alisyn Morris came up with back-to back steals for South to give the
Patriots a 57-53 lead with under two minutes remaining in the game.
Steady defense down the stretch would enable South to preserve the
victory.
South coach Scott Stephens said he was proud of the way his girls never
got down on themselves and stepped it up in the second half to get the
win.
“We challenged our defense to step up their intensity in the second half
and they responded,” Stephens said. “Our pressure in the fourth quarter
got to them and this is just a great comeback win.” |
