Patriots play like a champion against Warriors

PARKERSBURG — Kim Stephens was an offensive force in the paint.

The 5-foot-10 senior frontcourt player scored a career-high 22 points as Class AAA defending state champion Parkersburg South defeated visiting Warren, 70-46, in girls basketball action at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center Monday night.

"I was very determined to score tonight," said Stephens, who also grabbed 10 rebounds to post a double-double on the night. "When Taylor (Phillips) got into foul trouble (three in the first quarter), I knew I had to step up."

Stephens said that her previous career-high was 20 points, recorded last year. This season, she’s averaging 10.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

"Kim was offensive-minded tonight, and we were able to get the ball to her more," said PSHS head coach and father Scott Stephens, whose No. 3-ranked Patriots improved their mark to 10-2.

Before fouling out halfway through the fourth quarter, Phillips added 13 points. Danielle Floyd had a double-nine with nine points and nine caroms, and Ali Morris chipped in with eight markers (seven in the fourth quarter), five assists, and five steals.

"South is a good, aggressive, seasoned team," said Warren coach Kenny DeMoss, whose Warriors (6-6) dropped their fifth straight game. "They put a lot of defensive pressure on us."

Mallory Brooks scored 12 points, and Kristen Cozzens netted nine to pace the Warriors, who shot about 33 percent from the floor (17-54).

When the two schools met earlier this month (Jan. 4) in Vincent, Parkersburg South had to rally in the fourth quarter to earn a 61-53 win. In that contest, Kim Stephens tallied just five points.

"We played well as a team tonight," she said. "When we played them over at their place, we didn’t really play like the defending champions. So, we wanted to come out tonight and show them that we were."

Scott Stephens also believed that playing at the Rod Oldham Athletic Center might have been a factor as well.

"We like playing in our gym," the South coach said. "Tonight, we pressured the ball, and made (Warren) play a little faster than what they probably wanted to play.

"I’m really pleased that a lot of girls got to play tonight. It really makes practices more fun."

Kim Stephens scored six points and Phillips had five as South staked itself to a 20-7 first-quarter advantage. Warren was just two-of-12 from the field.

With three fouls on her, Phillips sat out the second period. But Stephens more than picked up the slack, scoring 10 points as the Patriots went into the locker room at halftime leading 36-20.

Warren actually outpointed South, 13-12, in the third quarter, and then, thanks to a late 6-0 run, reduced the deficit to 12 points (45-33) with about a minute left.

Early in the fourth quarter, South put together a 10-0 run on points by Morris (4), Stephens (4) and Floyd (2) to stretch its advantage to 58-33.

"You know, when we played South at our place, we broke the press better," DeMoss said. "This time, we didn’t."

South is scheduled to play at Fairmont Senior at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Warren hosts Marietta in a Washington County showdown at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Warriors dropped a 63-48 decision to the Tigers at Sutton Gymnasium in the first meeting on Nov. 30.
